Although we’ve only held one lecture in our spring series to date, we want to get some feedback from you to help us plan for the fall series and into 2014. You can take a quick (less than 5 minute) survey.

We’ve had a few similar questions come in on the topic of the liquid refreshment that will be served at the Poker Party on Saturday, March 16. There will be wine, soft drinks, and bottled water as well as beer as at the event. If you’re on the fence about attending because of the selection of drinks, don’t be afraid! There will be a variety of beverages for you to choose that evening.

Registration for their annual conference, which will be held May 21-22 in Gettysburg, PA, is now open. Next Monday, February 11 at 6 PM, there will be a public meeting in the Council Chambers at Rouss City Hall to discuss the National Register nomination of Hawthorne and the Old Town Spring Building on Amherst Street. These properties have been recommended as eligible for listing in the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places. The Membership and Events Committee is hard at work planning the events roster for 2013. While we have some fabulous event ideas in mind for the upcoming year, we don’t have all the supplies we need to make the events a success. The committee has generated a list of items we will need to have loaned and/or donated:

Tablecloths, preferably white, for card tables
Croquet sets
Flameless candles
Decks of playing cards

Looking for something to do on Wednesday evening? A free lecture entitled “History Teaches Us to Hope: Drawing Inspiration from the Shenandoah Valley’s Civil War” begins at 7 p.m. in Halpin-Harrison Hall, Stimpson Auditorium, Shenandoah University. Assistant Professor of history and Director of the Center for Civil War History at Lord Fairfax Community College Jonathan A. Noyalas is the guest speaker.
Jonathan Noyalas is the author or editor of eight books on Civil War Era history and has also written scores of essays, book chapters, articles and reviews for scholarly and popular publications such as America’s Civil War, Civil War Times, Blue & Gray, Civil War News, and Hallowed Ground. In March 2012 he served as chair of the sesquicentennial conference on Stonewall Jackson’s 1862 Valley Campaign and will chair the National Historic District’s Sesquicentennial conference in 2013. He is currently under contract to write a book about the Battle of Fisher’s Hill and is also continuing his research on postwar reunions and reconciliation in the Shenandoah Valley.

Looking for something to do next week? The Handley Library will host their last annual program leading up to their 100th anniversary celebration on Wednesday, August 15, at 7 p.m.
When Judge John Handley made his will in 1890, there were only a handful of public libraries in Virginia, and none west of the Blue Ridge. His gifts for the establishment of Handley Library and Handley High School received attention of big-city newspapers and made Winchester famous.
Former Winchester Schools Superintendent Dennis Kellison and Handley Library Executive Assistant Pat Ritchie will discuss Handley, his life, and how his gifts affected the people of Winchester. The program is free and open to the public and will be held in Handley Library auditorium. Refreshments will be served.
