For those who have been reading along in PHW’s 50th Anniversary blog posts each Friday, we are happy to report the original list of buildings deemed worthy of preservation by PHW (alluded to in the post on January 24) has been discovered tucked away in an old file. Just a reminder, since it’s getting close to tax season and we know some tickets have not yet been accounted for:
If you have unused Holiday House Tour tickets from 2013, you may return the tickets to our office at the Hexagon House for a refund or tax-deductible donation receipt for the amount of the tickets, some combination of donation and refund, OR apply your tickets to membership dues at PHW. Lots of options there for you; hopefully you’ll find one that meets your needs

Bill: HB 995 – Income tax and sales and use tax; expiration dates for credits and exemptions

Summary: Places two-year expiration dates on various income tax credits and sales and use tax exemptions, including the Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit. The revenue attributable to the expiration of these credits and exemptions shall be used to lower the corporate income tax rate.
Status: Delegate Hugo’s bill has been continued to 2015 General Assembly Session. No vote will be taken on this bill during the 2014 General Assembly. Thank you to all the Preservation Members who reached out to Delegate Hugo’s office to express concern regarding the impact that HB 995 would have on the Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit. The threat to the Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit is not gone, however, just postponed. Preservation Virginia will remain vigilant in its efforts to protect this tax credit and to educate the legislature about its value.
We’ll continue to post any breaking news on this bill that we receive.

Voice your opinions on why historic tax credits are a vital part of preserving our heritage and keeping our economy prosperous. Remember that if the Virginia historic tax credits are eliminated, homeowners will no longer be able to utilize historic tax credits on their private residences. Federal historic tax credits apply only to income-producing properties like businesses and rental properties.
Visit virginiageneralassembly.gov to find the contact information for your district’s legislators. If you are in the Winchester area, the city has prepared a guide to properties recently rehabilitated thanks to historic tax credits and other incentives. Rouss City Hall Murder Mystery Tour
On Friday September 27 from 6;30 – 9pm, Saturday September 28 from 2-4pm and again from 6:30-9, WLT is partnering with the City of Winchester and Shenandoah University in the Rouss City Hall Mystery Tour.
