The Winchester Little Theatre Board of Directors cordially invites you to join the media, members, volunteers, and distinguished guests to celebrate the installation of the Historic Designation Plaque from the City of Winchester. Come sip champagne, savor sweets and enjoy a fun, dynamic interactive afternoon while we await the arrival of the Restoration Ghost Train.

Reminder for the Lunch and Learn Lecture on Tuesday

We hope you enjoy your long Columbus Day weekend, but before you forget, if you would like to reserve a lunch for the Tuesday, Oct. 14 lecture on Shenandoah University and PHW: Partners in Preservation, please do so by Monday at 5 PM (the PHW office will be open on Monday).

Lunch and Learn Lecture Ready for Viewing

The PHW Lunch and Learn Lecture on Sept. 23, 2014 concerning the Winchester Little Theatre restoration project is ready for viewing on Youtube. The lecture includes a three part program by Shirley Echelman, Tim Machado, and David Logan, going over the history of the theatre and the proposed plan of action to restore it. At the end of the lecture are selected excerpts from the walk around the outside of the building.

“Moving Midway” at the MSV on August 16

Magic Lantern Theater and the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley will be hosting an outdoor screening of the film “Moving Midway” at the Museum on August 16, 7-9 PM.

This is a highly engaging film with a preservation theme – the relocation of a large North Carolina plantation home called Midway several miles from a busy commercial highway. What begins as a project of engineering becomes a meditation on Southern history and traditions. The engineering details of moving a large antebellum house are fascinating, as are the broader historic, social and racial issues and the impact on those, black and white, with ties to the plantation.

The Inside & Out Home and Design Expo, July 26

Come down to the Old Town Mall on July 26 between 10 AM and 6 PM for the Inside & Out Home and Design Expo presented by the Top of Virginia Building Association.

PHW’s table will be near Riley Capital Management, 121 South Loudoun Street. We are excited to unveil both guided and self-guided architectural walking tours focused on the Old Town Mall for this event. Due to popular demand, we will also have a new architectural treasure hunt challenge for you to try. Get all the answers correct and you could earn yourself a free year’s membership to PHW! And if you just want to put some faces to names, PHW members will be on hand to chat about the organization and what we do.

What’s New at These Old Houses Tonight

Join PHW and the Friends of the Handley Regional Library for the presentation “What’s New at These Old Houses: The Changing Role of Historic House Museums” in the Handley Library Auditorium, 7 p.m.

In observance of National Historic Preservation Month, three speakers will talk about changes, whether in the planning stages or already underway, at three local historic house museums. Featured speakers are Nicholas Redding of Long Branch Plantation, Dana Hand Evans of the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley and Glen Burnie Historic House, and Kristen Laise of Belle Grove Plantation. There will be time for a question and answer session after the talks. A reception will follow the program in the Benham Gallery.
