Two Properties Named to State Endangered List

Vic Bradshaw covered the news of the Taylor Hotel and the Aulick house at 414 South Braddock Street being listed in a state-wide list of endangered properties. While it is not an honor, it is a hope that the inclusion of the properties will raise awareness of the serious risks of deferred maintenance.

[Richard] Bell said that while he hopes the exposure of the two properties on the endangered list will prevent other owners from letting structural problems linger, PHW is concerned that one or both buildings could disappear from the local streetscape.

“There is a real risk,” he said, “of losing them forever.”

This Place Matters Photo Campaign

Last year, the National Trust started a campaign called “This Place Matters.” It is a simple campaign: Take a photo of yourself in front of a place that is significant to you. Share why your place matters – be it a nationally recognizable landmark or your favorite local diner, they are all priceless to you, and we want to hear your story.

National Preservation Month Proclamation

Mayor Minor proclaimed May to be National Preservation Month and presented PHW a plaque to that effect. Franklin Wright, PHW’s president, was on hand to present her in turn with a copy of “Winchester: Limestone, Sycamores and Architecture” in appreciation for her support of preservation efforts.

Last night also saw Sandra Bosley thanked before the Frederick County Board of Supervisors for her help on behalf of PHW with a student project concerning the Old Jail at 317 S. Cameron Street. The presentation was part of the Government Services Learning project of four Sherando High School students who successfully researched and applied for a Winchester Historic Plaque.

National Preservation Month Is Coming!

As many of you are aware, May is National Preservation Month. PHW has lined up several excellent events to celebrate in 2009, including a Winchester Underground tour of the Lovett Building on May 9, a special edition of the newsletter, and a photo campaign to tie into the National Trust’s theme “This Place Matters.” More information on these events will be posted soon.
