Entertainment:
The Bob Larson Trio will play 1920s and 1930s jazz from 7-10 PM. During the intermissions, volunteers from Winchester Little Theatre will share stories from Winchester’s time as a “dry” town. A tips jar for Winchester Little Theatre to benefit their Restoration Campaign will be available as a thank you to their support of PHW at this event.

Silent Auction Items:
Ruth's Tea Room, 1968 We are happy to report that, similar to the Memberfest held at EBS Gallery, we will have several gift baskets and other interesting items up for silent auction. The silent auction proceeds will benefit PHW.

One of the items in the auction is a framed print of Ruth’s Tea Room on East Cecil Street. This high quality print of Jane Caspar’s painting of Ruth’s Tea Room, 1968 is reproduced from the original oil painting on fiberboard. The print measures 13 x 17 with a white border, at the bottom of which is printed:

Ruth’s Tea Room, 1968
128 E. Cecil Street
Winchester, Virginia
Oil on fiberboard by Jane Caspar

The prints are part of a fundraiser to support Vivienne Jackson’s ongoing living expenses. If you are not lucky enough to win the framed print at Memberfest, prints are available at Jim Riley’s office, 121 S. Loudoun St.
Unsigned print: $45 (+$5.00 S&H)
Signed print (limited to 50): $90 (+$5.00 S&H)
If you wish to pay more for the print, all the extra goes to Vivienne.

Images and History of Architecture and Industry Along Winchester’s Railroads on YouTube

Did you miss the September 29 lecture? You can now catch the event on YouTube. The three sections of the talk are in individual videos, so you may skip directly to the portion which interests you. The audience interactions are at the end of the third section. Although the audio is fairly muffled due to the location of the microphone at the live event, there were a number of good questions asked, and many others were not picked up on the audio at all. Thank you all for your insight and curiosity!

Friday Photos: North Loudoun Street

We have a small update to PHW’s digital collections at Flickr this week with just over 25 new photos. Images include several John G. Lewis photos from 1984 of the Kinney Shoe Store at 167 North Loudoun Street, the grand bank building at 201 North Loudoun Street, and several images of the Taylor Hotel collapse shortly after it occurred in October 2007 by Frank Wright. Catch them at the PHW Flickr photostream.

Expanded Historic District Update

PHW has received word from the Department of Historic Resources that the proposed expanded National Register Historic District (including parts of Amherst Street/West Boscawen Street/South Stewart Street and Pall Mall Street from South Kent Street to South Washington Street) has passed the first hurdle at the state level and has been added to the Virginia Historic Landmarks Register. The application has been forwarded on to the national level, and a determination can be expected in about 45 days.

As noted, these expanded areas that were not previously subject to Board of Architectural Review will remain free of any additional oversight for exterior changes. The listing on the state and national registers only opens the door for state and federal historic tax credit opportunities. This also provides incentives for those properties, like Amherst Street, which were subject to review at the local level but not eligible for the historic tax credits.

Congratulations to the 395 resources recognized as contributing structures in this expanded historic district!
